Once we have achieved your new beautiful smile, the journey is not quite complete. Now we need to keep your teeth in the right position. Your teeth will keep moving throughout your lifetime. Wearing your retainer can keep them from becoming crowded or crooked again. To prevent this it is important that you:
- Retainer wear: You should wear your retainer according to Dr. Ellis' instructions. Usually, you will have to wear it 24/7 for the first 4 to 6 weeks, then 12-18 hours a day for 3-6 months, and at night indefinitely. You will never stop using a retainer, but wear time gradually decreases over time.
- Retainer care: If you are not wearing your retainer, remember to put it in its case. Avoid wrapping it in a napkin because you may accidently throw it away. Keep your retainer away from direct heat. Place it in a cool place. Do not put the retainer near your pets. Pets enjoy using retainers as an expensive chew toy!
- Retainer cleaning: When you remove your retainer rinse it with water. Remember to brush your retainers at least two times a day with toothpaste when you brush your teeth. You can use cleaning tablets, such as Efferdent periodically. Never use alcohol or boiling water to clean your retainers.
- Retainer emergencies: Contact our office as soon as possible if the following occurs:
- You misplace your retainer
- Your retainer is causing you any discomfort or pain, does not fit properly or breaks
